Nine years after The Return of the King (the final film in the the Lord of the Rings trilogy) Peter Jackson plans to take us all back to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Synopsis: A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them.
Unlike the LOTR trilogy, the Hobbit (also planned as trilogy) focuses on the story of Bilbo Baggins instead of the search for, protection of, and ultimately the destruction of the ring of power. While the ring will make it into the story line the focus remains on Bilbo and Gandalf's adventures.
Despite narrowing the scope of the film The Hobbit still appears to be just as big if not bigger than the 3 previous films. Familiar faces will litter the scenes, namely Ian McKellen, but there are many new faces too.
